Former Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford did some things right, but his rotation structure put the team at a disadvantage.
There are three main responsibilities of a coach. One of them is implementing an effective system that your players buy into and abide by. Another is in-game coaching — keeping the team focused on the gameplan (or adapting it to fit the opponent) and designing/calling plays for the team to aid in the efficiency of the offense. Perhaps the most overlooked yet equally important responsibility of coaches is rotation management.
For all of his strengths in implementing an effective system and player development (Kemba Walker, Jeremy Lamb, and Cody Zeller aren’t where they are now as players for no reason), Clifford and his staff were not creative/innovative with their rotations at all.
