Amherst, Mass. -- The Charlotte 49ers (2-2; 1-0), playing in their first road game of the 2018 season, gave up an early burst to Massachusetts (2-3), and were not able to recover as the Minutemen scored a 49-31 victory at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
UMass scored on the opening kickoff and its first two unpenalized plays from scrimmage to take a 21-0 lead in the opening four minutes. An additional first-quarter TD put UMass ahead, 28-0, with 8:51 left in the quarter.
"They have a lot of big play guys and it started with the opening kickoff," 49ers head coach Brad Lambert said.
