On this day 20 years ago, Charlotte baseball's Chris Haney became the program's highest-ever draft pick, a spot still held today. Haney played three seasons with the 49ers as a two-way player scoring 18 wins with a 3.35 ERA on the mound coupled with a .285 career average at the plate. Haney was drafted in the second round of the June draft by the Montreal Expos as the 64th pick overall. Haney spent his 11-year MLB career with five different teams, primarily the Kansas City Royals after a 1992 trade to the midwest. After just over a season with the Expos, Haney spent nearly six seasons in Kansas City before playing for Chicago (NL), Cleveland and Boston.
