The Charlotte 49ers officially broke ground on its new football stadium complex on Thursday, April 28, 2011 as Niner Nation packed the on-campus fields where the 15,000-seat stadium would be located.

There was tailgating and goalposts, standing ovations and confetti and a “Pick-Axe Team” assembled to ceremoniously drive their axes into the turf. All said, a crowd of over 3,000 fans saw head football coach Brad Lambert officially break ground on the 49ers football stadium not with a shovel but with a front-end loader.
