Student Athletes Present at Annual APPLE Conference

u200bCHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Members of the Charlotte Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)- a national organization on college campuses that allows for student athletes to get involved with the local community, the university itself, and have a voice in NCAA governance- spent the weekend in Charlottesville, Va., at the annual APPLE Conference.

Charlotte sent four athletes to the convention: redshirt senior Jamal Covington from football, sophomore tennis player Josh Cook, redshirt sophomore Erin Powers from softball, and junior Brittany Moss from the women's track team.

APPLE, the Athletic Prevention Programming and Leadership Education Model, was founded by the University of Virginia and UVA's Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention in 1991 and identifies seven areas that athletic departments can impact substance abuse among student athletes: recruitment, expectations and attitudes, policies, education, drug testing, sanctioning, and referral and counseling.
