Smith Homers as Baseball Drops Opener at FAU 5-2

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Charlotte made things interesting in the ninth, but host Florida Atlantic used a pair of long balls including one in the first to register a 5-2 win in the Conference USA opener on Friday night. The 49ers skid hits four while the Owls scored their fifth-straight win.

"The margin for error for teams on the road is thin," started Head Coach Loren Hibbs. "Arms in this league are going to be pro guys. That's the way it is in this league, but we have to make better in-game adjustments."

Florida Atlantic (22-8, 7-3 C-USA) started the night off with a leadoff walk by Tyler Frank, saw David Miranda beat out a potential double play ball, all for Pedro Pages to connect for a three-run homer in the bottom of the first.
