Charlotte, N.C. -- Charlotte surrendered six runs in the fourth inning as Marshall scored a 12-6 victory in the first game of the three-game Conference USA series at Hayes Stadium.
Charlotte got to Marshall starter Joshua Shapiro (3-0), who had given up just one earned run in five previous appearances, for two runs to tie the game in the second, but Shapiro held Charlotte hitless for the next five innings while the Herd piled up nine runs to take an 11-2 lead.
Charlotte's Harris Yett hit a grand slam in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to nine games and tighten the gap to 11-6.
