The lone Division III national championship won in a team sport in Alma College history happened in 1992 when the Scots’ women’s basketball team accomplished the feat.
A banner proudly hangs in Art Smith Arena commemorating the national title, while also serving as a reminder that anything is possible in the realm of athletics.
Although the women’s college basketball landscape has changed considerably over the past 20-plus years, Alma College can look back fondly on the hoopla it created in defeating Moravian College (Pa.) 79-75 on March 24, 1992.
The years since have been less prosperous as the Scots have only claimed one Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship over the past 23 seasons, coming back in 1994 when they shared the crown with Calvin College.
