MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A team scores 44 points and its quarterback throws six touchdown passes? Certainly, the offense is going to garner its share of the glory.

But the Central Michigan defense could not be overlooked after the Chippewas’ 44-21 victory Saturday over UNLV at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

UNLV seized a 21-14 lead midway through the second quarter. Two of the Rebels’ touchdowns came on big plays – a blocked punt and an 85-yard run by Lexington Thomas.

After UNLV quarterback Johnny Stanton tossed a 13-yard TD pass to Darren Woods with 7:33 to play in the first half to put UNLV in front, the Chippewa defense pitched a shutout.
