Defense Shines as Chippewas Take Down Rhode Island in 3OT Thriller to Open Up 2017 Campaign

When your defense plays that well, who cares who’s playing quarterback.

Much attention heading into 2017’s season opener was on the quarterback competition between graduate transfer Shane Morris and redshirt freshman Tony Poljan, but the talking point for Thursday night’s opener was the Chippewa defense as it tied a school record with six interceptions in a 30-27 triple overtime victory over Rhode Island.

“I was happy with our effort,” said third-year CMU head coach John Bonamego following the non-conference victory. “Our defense really was stellar tonight aside from a couple plays.”

The first half was all Chippewas (1-0) as the visiting Rhode Island Rams (0-1) managed just 99 yards of total offense against a stout defensive attack from the hosts.
