Data helps CMU student-athletes safely return from concussions

Set in a corner of the large workout room in the Indoor Athletic Complex, the HiTrainer blends in with nearby treadmills.

Initially, the Central Michigan University Athletics strength and conditioning staff used the HiTrainer as it was designed, to help student-athletes recover from surgeries and injuries and improve performance. The non-motorized treadmill collects and shows data, including how the user is balanced.

Now the machine is key to how CMU Athletics Sports Medicine Department staff evaluates student-athletes returning to action after a concussion. Its functions allow CMU athletic trainers to use data-based decision making to ensure hidden lingering effects from concussions are not present.
