Former Central Michigan basketball head coach Charlie Coles has been selected for induction into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame as part of its 62nd class.
Coles served as CMU’s head coach from 1985-1991, compiling a 91-85 record in his six seasons, including a 22-8 mark in the 1986-87 campaign. The Chippewas captured the MAC regular season and tournament championships that season, earning Coles MAC Coach of the Year honors, and secured the program’s fourth invitation to the NCAA Tournament. The following season, Coles’ Chippewas posted a 19-13 record and finished second in the MAC standings.
Coles coached three First Team All-MAC players at Central Michigan – Ervin Leavy (1987), Tommie Johnson (1988), and Hall of Famer Dan Majerle, a three-time honoree (1986-88), who would later become a three-time NBA all-star.
