The Central Michigan football team opens the 2017 season on Thursday at home against Rhode Island (7:05 p.m./ESPN3/WUPS 98.5 FM)

John Bonamego is in his third year as the Chippewas’ coach, and he is looking for his program to make strides toward the top of the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas finished 7-6 in 2015, Bonamego’s first season at the helm, and 6-7 a year ago.

CMU has qualified for a bowl game in both of Bonamego’s first two seasons. In 2015, he led the Chippewas to a first-place finish in the MAC West.
