Junior distance runner Sam Merriman of the Case Western Reserve University men's track and field team set a new school-record in the 5,000-meter run at the UW-Platteville Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Thursday evening.
With a time of 14:29.93, Merriman finished competition in eighth place. The time bested Peter Kummant's time of 14:33.40 set back in 1977.
Prior to Thursday's competition, Merriman's best time in the event was a 14:53.38 set last season.
Also competing at the invitational, junior Zach Roshon finished 54th in the 5,000-meter run with a career-best time of 15.
