There were many reasons Michael Bennett needed to call Cam Newton

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Cam Newton made a trip to Charleston last summer to visit with families of the nine people who were shot and killed by a 21-year-old white man at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback called the killing a “senseless act’’ and talked about how it was important for him to make the trip as the face of an NFL organization that represents North and South Carolina.

The recent violence in America was addressed during the orientation of Newton’s 7-on-7 football tournament late last month.

The phrase “Every 1 Matters,’’ Newton’s mantra since he began his foundation more than five years ago, was on the lanyard worn by the participants and volunteers.
