Charlotte, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers may soon have a new owner.
Several outlets reported Friday that hedge-fund billionaire David Tepper is the leading candidate to buy the franchise from Jerry Richardson.
NFL owners were told at their annual meeting in February that a winning bid could be selected by the end of April. Although that didn't happen, the sale process could be wrapped up at the next owners' meetings at the end of May in Atlanta.
At least 24 owners must approve any team transactions.

According to Tthe New York Times, the sale of the Panthers is being widely watched in the league because the final price will become a bench mark for other team sales.
