Spartanburg, S.C. — Carolina Panthers cornerback Bene Benwikere will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list, opening the door for a bevy of young defensive backs on the team’s roster.
Benwikere, primed to claim the team’s top cornerback spot, is still recovering from the broken ankle he suffered in Carolina’s 38-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 14 last season.
“It gives him an opportunity to continue his rehab,” Rivera said Wednesday afternoon. “What everybody needs to understand is that what he did was very traumatic to that ankle; it takes time.
“Rather than exposing him to work that’s out there, we’re going to continue to expose him to the rehab program and make sure he’s 100 percent before we throw him out there.
