Panthers' Cam Newton to have shoulder surgery, miss OTAs

Charlotte, N.C. — Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cut in his throwing shoulder on March 30 in Charlotte, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.

Newton will miss Carolina’s offseason practice program, but is “projected” to return for the Panthers’ training camp in Spartanburg, S.C.

The 2015 National Football League MVP suffered the injury in Week 14 against San Diego. Newton finished the game, but an MRI the following week revealed a partially torn rotator cuff.

“It is well-documented and well-researched that overhead throwing athletes commonly have wear and tear to their rotator cuffs,” head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion told the team’s official website.
