The Carolina Panthers must cut their roster to 53 by 4 p.m. ET Saturday, Sept. 1. Here's the final 53-man roster projection:
Garrett Gilbert appears to have fallen behind Heinicke, who like Newton is a dual threat as a runner, and there are other positions the Panthers could use the third quarterback spot on. Heinicke's experience in Norv Turner's offense at Minnesota also gives him an edge.
Barner is the wild card here. The Panthers just as easily could keep Elijah Hood, but they can also hide him on the practice squad.
