New Panthers owner David Tepper disclosed that he is “contractually obligated” to keep the enormous Jerry Richardson statue in front of Bank of America stadium. In light of the reasons for Mr. Richardson selling the Panthers in the first place, the revelation about the statue generated understood criticism here at CSR and elsewhere.
Let’s assume for a moment that Jerry Richardson heard the criticism, realized the statue as-is was tone-deaf, then came up with a compromise: You can replace the statue, but the new one needs to depict the single greatest moment from the years I owned the team so my legacy isn’t totally forgotten.
