The Carolina Panthers have announced their plans to promote former Panthers and Giants linebacker Chase Blackburn to special teams coordinator, according to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.
The coaching change seems odd on the surface, considering the Panthers’ special teams unit saw a marked improvement in 2017 under the leadership of Thomas McGaughey, but according to Person’s report it seems that McGaughey wants to look for another coaching opportunity elsewhere.
McGaughey, who oversaw a productive special teams unit in 2017, opted not to sign a contract rollover last offseason and had begun exploring other opportunities, sources said.
