Carolina Panthers Film Analysis: Empty backfield formations

The Carolina Panthers don’t run a spread offense, but they might want to incorporate more spread offense looks and concepts in the upcoming weeks to help their struggling offense move the ball down the field.

One of the most common and recognizable spread offense alignments is the empty backfield look, also called “five-wide”. Empty backfield formations are a great way to spread the defense out and quickly get the ball out of your quarterback’s hands. This should be appealing to the Panthers, who have had pass protection issues on their offensive line all year long. Using empty backfield sets spreads the defense out and lightens the box, so this makes it easier for the offensive line and quarterback to identify potential blitzers.
