The Carolina Panthers have released cornerback Bené Benwikere and promoted Zack Sanchez from the practice squad as the fallout from Julio Jones’ record-setting Sunday for the Atlanta Falcons continues.
Jones caught 12 passes for 300 yards on Sunday in a 49-33 rout, including a number of deep passes with Benwikere in coverage. Benwikere, who broke a bone in his leg in December and missed the early part of training camp while recovering, said Sunday his conditioning played a role.
Sanchez, one of three cornerbacks selected by the Panthers in the draft after the departure of Josh Norman, has been on the practice squad since the team’s final round of cuts to reach the regular-season roster limit of 53.
