Carolina Panthers add linebacker Clay Johnston to practice squad, waive defensive back Derrek Thomas

The Panthers announced yesterday that they have added linebacker Clay Johnston to their practice squad. Johnston becomes the 16th and final member of the team’s practice squad after being released by the Rams, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Johnston, who played under head coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow at Baylor, recorded 237 career tackles in four years. He was a two-time, second-team All-Big 12 honoree. The Rams drafted him in the seventh round but released him Saturday. Johnston’s father, Kent, is currently the Panthers’ Director of Player Wellness.
