CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on Sunday may have sealed his bid to win the NFL Most Valuable Player Award – in the first quarter.
Newton completed 7 of 9 pass attempts for 187 yards and two touchdowns for a perfect passer rating of 158.3 in guiding Carolina to a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
He led the Panthers to 260 first-quarter yards, the most by any NFL team in any quarter this season.
Newton became only the second Carolina quarterback to complete two touchdown passes of at least 45 yards in a single game.
