The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Alexander Semin on waivers with the intention of buying him out.
The Carolina Hurricanes announced Tuesday that they have placed the Russian winger on waivers and intend to buy out the remaining three years of his contract. With $21 million remaining on the deal, the Hurricanes willl pay out $2.33 million for the next six seasons ($14 million in all) to part with Semin.
Semin’s future was one of Carolina’s many offseason touchstone topics, but easily its most financially charged. After registering 44 points in 44 games of the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, then-GM Jim Rutherford rewarded Semin with a five-year, $35 million contract.
