HELSINKI - The man who is hoping one day to become the NHL’s first European-born head coach in 15 years has a rather colourful hockey resume.
Rikard Gronborg, who was born in a town just south of Stockholm, Sweden, went to St. Cloud State in the NCAA on a scholarship, spent a year as an assistant coach with the Spokane Chiefs in the Western Hockey League and even played a little bit of professional roller hockey in Arizona. In September, the head coach of Team Sweden at the World Junior Championship will take over the men’s team at the World Cup of Hockey.
