Wings sign Abdelkader to 7-year, $30-million extension

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings have given forward Justin Abdelkader a seven-year contract extension worth nearly $30 million.

He signed the deal Thursday, keeping him off the free agent market next summer.

The 28-year-old Abdelkader was drafted by Detroit in the second round of the 2005 NHL draft.

Abdelkader has four goals and seven assists this season. He scored 23 goals last year, more than doubling his previous personal best of 10 goals, and had a career-high 44 assists. He has 65 goals and 74 assists in 413 games since 2008 when he made his debut in the league.
