ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA - Three months ago, Michael Matheson was a minor-leaguer who had yet to make his NHL debut.
Today, he is leading all defencemen at the world championship in scoring.
"It is quite unbelievable," said the 22-year-old Matheson.
Indeed, Matheson had no idea that he would be playing for Team Canada — let alone would have two goals and four points in three games — when he was spending his rookie season in the American Hockey League. He didn’t even know if he would get into an NHL game.
It was not until near the end of February when the Florida Panthers called him up and Matheson appeared in three games.
