For most of the night, it didn’t seem far-fetched to ask Martin Jones if could stop climate change, stop rocks from chipping every second windshield on Deerfoot Trail or stop the Edmonton Oilers from once again winning the NHL Draft lottery.
After all, he was stopping everything else.
A former standout for the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen, Jones was the undisputed star in his return to the Saddledome, stopping 47 shots to backstop the San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Calgary Flames.
Joe Colborne finally solved Jones with a terrific tip on a late power-play, but Sharks winger Joe Pavelski would score just 19 seconds into overtime to ensure Jones was rewarded for his efforts.
