It’s funny how a couple of kids can completely flip the script.
For a long, looooonnnnggg time, the Calgary Flames’ amateur scouting staff was a frequent target for wisecracks and criticism. After all, their history of first-round draft picks featured few hits and mostly misses.
And then along came sharpshooter Sean Monahan, who was selected by the Flames with the sixth pick in 2013 and has scored 53 times and clearly emerged as captain-material in two big-league campaigns since then.
And then along came snarky Sam Bennett, who was Calgary’s call at fourth-overall last June and — after shoulder surgery delayed his arrival — stepped right into a top-six role during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
