Wayne Gretzky never really left Edmonton because his bronze statue was always welcoming Oilers’ fans to the House That 99 built at Rexall Place, but now The Great One is back in the flesh.
After his statue, which went up in 1999, was unveiled outside the doors to the Oilers new home at Rogers Place Wednesday, Gretzky was unveiled as the new partner and vice-chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group. Gretzky has no money in this endeavour with owner Daryl Katz, but the reunion with the team he won four Stanley Cups with is on.
“We’re giving a new home to one of Edmonton’s iconic landmarks, the statue of Wayne Gretzky, which represents immense team success of the Oilers and the record books with Wayne himself,” said Katz.
