Oilers captain Connor McDavid set the tone for opening night and the rest of the season

In his first NHL regular season game as captain of the Edmonton Oilers, Wayne Gretzky had a goal and an assist.

In his first game as the youngest captain in this history of the National Hockey League, the 19-year-old supposedly too-young-to-be-captain, too-inexperienced-to-lead Connor McDavid scored two goals as if to say, “Would everyone here kindly step to the rear and let a winner lead the way.”

He personally brought the Oilers back from a 3-3 tie en route to a 7-4 win over the Calgary Flames.

In his first regular season game in Rogers Place, McDavid scored a goal on a penalty shot.
