The Saddledome opened in 1983. The longtime home of the Calgary Flames already ranks among the oldest venues in the National Hockey League.
McMahon Stadium dates back much further, to 1960. It will soon be the worst facility in the Canadian Football League.
Both buildings are, to steal a phrase from former Flames GM Jay Feaster, ‘post-apex.’
And that’s being kind.
“You don’t replace things because they’re old,” said Ken King, the president and CEO of Calgary Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Flames, Stampeders, Western Hockey League’s Hitmen and National Lacrosse League’s Roughnecks.
“You replace things because they’re not efficient and they’re not functional and they’re not doing the job that they were originally designed and intended to do.
