There was a reason why Ryan Getzlaf was not his usual self during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The Anaheim Ducks captain was hobbled by a sports hernia for an unspecified portion of the post-season, the club said in a statement.
Getzlaf will not need surgery, requiring only rest and rehabilitation to recover.
The news is not so good for Ducks centre Nate Thompson, who will undergo shoulder surgery after he was injured during the team’s season finale against the Arizona Coyotes.
Thompson missed the first-round playoff series against the Winnipeg Jets, but returned to play 12 games before the Ducks were eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference final in seven.
