Maple Leafs hire assistant coaches for Mike Babcock

TORONTO - Mike Babcock’s coaching staff with the Maple Leafs has rounded into shape.

Three assistant coaches — D.J. Smith, Jim Hiller and Andrew Brewer — have been hired, the Leafs announced on Tuesday.

On Monday, the Toronto Sun was the first to report that Smith, who coached the Oshawa Generals to a Memorial Cup title in May, had been offered a contract by the Leafs.

Hiller, whose name has been tied to the Leafs for several weeks, and Brewer were part of Babcock’s coaching staff with the Detroit Red Wings.

“I’m excited to have them join them the organization,” Babcock said in a statement.
