The luck of the draft.
Bob Gainey was sitting at the Dallas Stars table on the Saddledome floor in Calgary 15 years ago today when he pointed up to the stands and saw the brothers sitting beside each other.
“Wouldn’t it be great if we drafted both of them?” he said to his scouting staff. “Wouldn’t it be a hell of a story?”
He said it more than once after the Stars selected centre Joel Lundqvist early in the third round of the NHL draft. He said it during the fourth round and again in the fifth.
