Three years after facing off in front of 105,000 frantic fans in a winter wonderland setting inside Michigan Stadium, the Red Wings and Leafs are poised to once again play in the elements, this time in Toronto.
Sources confirmed Wednesday that the Leafs are expected to host the Red Wings at renovated BMO Field on Jan. 1, 2017, with an official announcement expected from the league as early as Wednesday evening.
Because Jan. 1, 2017 falls on an NFL Sunday, the game will not be called the “Winter Classic.
