In fourth season with Flame, Sean Monahan developing into well-rounded player

The other day, while the Calgary Flames faced a delay in their practice due to some issues with the Scotiabank Saddledome ice, Glen Gulutzan pulled Sean Monahan aside and had a chat.

It was short — maybe five minutes or less — but the head coach had some key messages he wanted to get across to his star centre.

The latest chapter in the 22-year-old’s 2016-17 season included the snapping of an 11-game goal slump in Friday’s 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Monahan continued it with a goal in Edmonton and another marker (albeit an empty netter) in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the visiting Florida Panthers.
