Hockey Canada happy with world junior host cities, just not back-to-back years

Scott Smith is in, Tom Renney is sticking around and Mitchell Stephens is out.

Never mind that Canada has a game on Thursday night at the 2017 world junior hockey championship, Hockey Canada chose to announce early in the afternoon at the Air Canada Centre that Smith, the organization’s chief operating officer, will take over as president on July 1.

Smith, who has been with Hockey Canada since 1995, will retain his COO title.

Tom Renney announced he will vacate the president’s chair but will remain as CEO.

“Tom and I have a vision of maintaining a very strong presence for all of our teams on the ice,” Smith said.
