On this date in 1989, the Calgary Flames joined an elite group!
By virtue of their 4-2 win in Game 6 of the 1989 Stanley Cup Final, the Flames captured their first - and so far, only - Stanley Cup.
Doug Gilmour scored twice, including the game-winner, Lanny McDonald scored the insurance goal in his final National Hockey League game, and Colin Patterson scored the other goal. Mike Vernon made 20 saves for the win, and Al MacInnis was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner following the game.
The Flames were one of two visiting teams to beat a Montreal club in the old Forum for a Stanley Cup.
