Flames Captain Mark Giordano has officially been named the team’s nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. Each NHL team’s local members of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association nominate a player for the annual award presented to the NHL “player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey”.
The award was first commissioned in 1968 in tribute to Minnesota North Stars skater Bill Masterton, who passed away from injuries sustained on-ice during a game.
In addition to the season-long conversation of Giordano’s possible Norris Trophy nomination for “defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position”, the veteran defenseman will have plenty to look forward to once the 2019 NHL Awards Ceremony rolls around.
