Fluke goal lifts Capitals to series lead over Rangers

WASHINGTON - Another unlikely springtime hero has emerged in the NHL playoffs.

And this one has done so by scoring an unlikely goal.

Simply trying to put the puck in front from behind the net, Capitals’ third liner Jay Beagle wound up bouncing it off Rangers defenceman Keith Yandle and in for the only goal in a 1-0 victory at a “Rockin’ The Red” Verizon Center Monday night.

The win gives the Capitals a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-seven second-round series.

The goal, at 7:31 of the second period, was Beagle’s first of the playoffs and just his third in 33 career post-season games.
