Consider it Karma, albeit a few years late.
During Saturday’s 2-1 shootout loss to the Vancouver Canucks, the Calgary Flames were gifted the first goal of the game — an own-goal which was scored during a delayed penalty call. At the 9:14 mark of the first period with netminder Ryan Miller sprinting to the bench, Loui Eriksson tried to backhand a pass and it slid, embarrassingly, into an open net. It was the Canucks’ first game of the season, their home opener, and Eriksson’s first regular season game with Vancouver.
You can’t make this stuff up.
Somewhere in the press box, where Dennis Wideman was sitting for this game, the Flames defender likely smirked to himself.
