Flames get scoring from unusual sources to take victory over Wings

DETROIT — Scoring by committee.

That’s been the company line from the Calgary Flames all season, especially since superstar winger Johnny Gaudreau suffered a broken finger.

Well, the committee certainly answered the bell in Sunday’s 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

Fourth-line mucker Garnet Hathaway celebrated his first strike at the National Hockey League level, third-line centre Matt Stajan scored his first of the season second-line middle-man Mikael Backlund — one of the more usual suspects — marked a milestone night with the game-winner as the Flames (8-11-1) opened a six-game sojourn with a hard-earned win.
