Ex-Kings forward Mike Richards charged with possession of a controlled substance in Canada

Former Los Angeles Kings forward Mike Richards was charged with possession of a controlled substance by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

He was formally charged August 25 and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 10.

An investigation began when Richards was stopped June 17 and reportedly involved the prescription drug oxycodone being discovered at a border crossing from the United States to Canada.

When the report reached the team during the 2015 NHL Draft, the Kings terminated the final five years of Richards' contract.

The Kings had been trying to trade Richards, who was scheduled to make $6 million next season.
