After years out in the cold, the massive doors of the Hockey Hall of Fame have swung open for three players who had just about abandoned hope.
Eric Lindros, Sergei Makarov and Rogie Vachon were admitted Monday by the selection committee, joining the late Pat Quinn in the builders’ wing.
“My God, the (16-year) wait is over,” an excited Makarov told Hall chairman Lanny McDonald, so happy to start his celebrating in Russia that he wasn’t able to make it on the conference call.
For Lindros, it meant an end to the debate about whether his shortened, non-Cup-winning career merited election.
