Edmonton Oilers defenceman Andrew Ference pitches into help Syrian refugees

PITTSBURGH - Andrew Ference did not like some of the negative sentiments directed towards Syrian refugees coming to Canada.

So the Edmonton Oilers defenceman decided to help a community organization preparing to assist an influx of refugees coming to the city.

Ference and his wife, Krista, donated $10,000 to the Mennonite Centre for Newcomers who set up an emergency fund to help the 1,000 or so refugees expected in Edmonton as the province welcomes a total of about 3,000 by February.

“They have many services that they’re going to provide for the refugees coming over,” Ference said.
