Dougie Hamilton would just as soon keep his community work a secret.
Like the rest of his Calgary Flames teammates, Hamilton is not looking for accolades when he visits the childrens’ hospital, surprises wide-eyed youngsters at their minor-hockey practices or assists with charity endeavours.
“It’s nice to get the recognition, but I’d rather not,” a humble Hamilton said Tuesday after accepting the J.R. McCaig Award, named for the late, longtime member of the Flames’ ownership group and presented to a skating staffer who shares his ‘enduring virtues of respect, courtesy and compassion for all individuals he encountered both in his professional and everyday life.
