NEW YORK - Not even an Alex Ovechkin promise and a follow-up goal can beat the New York Rangers in Game 7s at Madison Square Garden.
Derek Stepan scored at 11:24 of overtime as the Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals 2-1 Wednesday night.
The Rangers now move on to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference final.
The Lightning swept the season series with the Rangers, 3-0.
For the winner, Stepan had a rebound off a point shot by Dan Girardi bounce out to his stick, and with Capitals goalie Braden Holtby down he fired the puck high into the open part of the net.
